Professor Stuart Bearhop from the Centre for Ecology and Conservation uses cannon netting to catch light-bellied Brent Geese. Over the last 10 years over 3000 animals been marked and we now have a database comprising over 100000 resightings.
Please note that – though it looks dramatic – cannon netters are licensed, extremely well-trained and have the utmost regard for the safety of the birds they catch. Birds are ringed, some body measurements may be taken and then they are released.
